Cycle Three
Cycle Three Research Question
If transfer students receive online advising will this lead to increased BCOE SIR Rates. I will continue to this cycle until June 14.th
Cycle Three ActionsA. Continue Online advising through June 1st
B. Update and maintain the data regarding the number of students that received online advising C. Request the List of students that applied and were accepted to UCR BCOE from Admissions D. Request and review the number of SIR’ed Fall 12 transfer students E. Compare the names of the accepted students against the names of the students that received online advising. F. Compare the SIR’ed students with the list of those students that received advising online to see if students met with online SIR’ed at a higher rate than those that did not receive online advising. G. Compare the # of SIR’ed students from this year to last year to see if there is an increase. |
Cycle Three Actions
Artifacts CollectedI collected the following:
Evaluation of EvidenceLast year 316 students applied to BCOE. 240 of those students were accepted giving us an acceptance rate of 76%. Of the students that we accepted only 81 of them SIR’ed. That is a SIR rate of 34%. The goal of cycle 3 was to see if online advising could be used to create a higher SIR rate than last year through increased student contact. This year a total of 584 students applied to BCOE and 350 were accepted creating a new acceptance rate for the college of only 65%. Students that were accepted had to make the decision to attend or to SIR (sign there statement of intent to register) by June 1st.
As of June 1st 2012, 184 students SIR'ed 111 of them were met with online. This brings us to a SIR rate 47%. As of June 18th however 21 students acceptances were rescinded, meaning they didn’t complete or pass a required course at the last minute. This brought the total number of fall 12 transfer students down to 163. Interestingly only 1 of the 21 students was a student that was met with online. This means that of the 163 students transferring in fall 2012, 110 are students that I met with online. This means that our acceptance rate and SIR rate has changed. The official acceptance rate for BCOE fall 2012 is 61%. The SIR rate for this year is 49% almost half. This is an increase of 15%. Please see table T10. It is also interesting to note that we literally have doubled the number of SIR’ed students from 81 in 2011 to 163 in 2012. |
EvaluationI will evaluate the outcomes of this action by measuring if accepted Fall 12 students that received advising online complete the UC system SIR (Student Intent to Register) with UC Riverside BCOE at a higher rate than those that did not receive online advising.
Originally I wanted to measure the students with increased knowledge of STEM transfer requirements against acceptance rates. Though many students may have done better in classes they already registered for due to advising this can’t really be narrowed down as a specific reason of growth in acceptance. In order to measure that accurately I will need to compare the Fall 13 students that were shown to have increased knowledge of STEM transfer requirements after online advising with the Fall 13 acceptance rate. It would not be accurate to compare Fall 12 transfers with Fall 12 acceptance rates because students applied in November before the advising. |
